How to choose a travel backpack

Work through four questions in order, and the field narrows fast.

1. What capacity do you actually need?

For carry-on one-bag travel, 35–40Lis the range: enough for a week with packing cubes, small enough to clear most sizers. Go smaller (around 30L) if you pack light or take short trips; go bigger (45L+) only for genuinely long or cold-weather trips, and accept that you may have to check it. 3. How does it carry?
