How to pick a carry-on backpack that fits

Match the bag to your airline, not the average

“Carry-on compliant” is not one number. American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska all use 22 x 14 x 9 inches; Southwest and Frontier are more generous at 24 x 16 x 10; Ryanair’s free bag is a tiny 40 x 20 x 25 cm. If you mostly fly US majors, a 40L is fine. If budget-Europe is in your future, size down to 35L or plan to pay for a larger cabin bag. Soft bags cheat — use it carefully

Because backpacks are soft-sided, how full you pack one changes whether it fits. A 40L pack two-thirds full slides into a sizer; stuffed to bursting, it won’t.
