How to choose an under-seat backpack

Know your airline’s personal-item size

Personal-item limits vary more than carry-on limits do. American and Frontier publish 18 x 14 x 8 inches; JetBlue is 17 x 13 x 8; United is 17 x 10 x 9; Delta and Alaska just say “must fit under the seat.” If you fly one airline a lot, size to its number; if you fly several, aim for the smaller end. Use the softness — but don’t abuse it
