How to choose packing cubes

Standard or compression?

Start here, because it changes everything else. If your bag is big enough and you just want it organized, standard cubes (BAGAIL, Eagle Creek) are lighter, cheaper and gentler on your clothes. If you’re fighting to fit a week into a carry-on and you pack soft, squashable clothes— t-shirts, fleece, socks, a puffy — compression cubes earn their keep. How many, and what sizes?

A 6-piece setcovers a solo carry-on comfortably: a large cube for tops, a medium for bottoms, small cubes for underwear and socks, and a pouch or two. Size up to an 8-set if you want dedicated laundry and shoe bags, or if two people are sharing a bag. More cubes than that is usually more than a one-bagger needs — empty cubes are just weight.

What actually decides quality

Zippers and fabric, in that order. Compression cubes especially live and die on their zippers, because that’s the part taking the strain every time you cinch one down — it’s why a step up from bargain compression sets is worth it if you compress on every trip. The mistake buyers make
